2001 Broken Bow Highlights

Mvc-714f.jpg (118096 bytes)Broken Bow’s YHEC started with jacket weather and quickly warmed up with the afternoon sun and competitor’s scores. Ronnie Burke’s ranch was transformed into an area for all events even after December’s massive ice storm and resulting cleanup.

While the test and Wildlife ID’s were happening, everybody was fine-tuning their various events. We had one group of muzzleloader shooters who had a red fox run across in front of them. One group on the hunter safety trail was cautioned as to the probability of seeing snakes, and I was informed that sticks and rocks had driven such a critter under a log for good.

Four events were completed by noon and lunch was served to 70 folks. The afternoon continued to warm up and water supplies became appreciated.

Broken bow had 11 participants last year, with 27 competing this year. All participants were awarded gift cards, binoculars, flashlights, compasses or NRA Hunter’s Guides.

Overall winner was E. J. Oppenheimer of Tulsa, who passed down the Ruger 10/22 rifle to 2nd place overall and best friend, Richard Gibson, also of Tulsa. This was the third YHEC event that E. J. has won this year. Rafe Ford, Muskogee, won the junior event following very closely behind the two senior leaders.
