2001 Davis Highlights

Rifle.jpg (9344 bytes)Well Richard Chadwick was bound and determined to teach 30 young hunters how to keep their powder dry. He has ordered rain for this 3rd year in a row just so he can teach us how to shoot front-stuffers in the rain. Josh Wilkins shot a perfect score (300) with a gun borrowed fromYHEC! In the rain, this was truly impressive.

Randy Fehr from Chickasaw Nat’l Recreation Area gave our participants a fit with wildlife. Jeremy Wilkins scored a 180 to take 1st place and all of the kids now know what a buffalo feels like.

Archery.jpg (11363 bytes)Archery was pretty tough for JR's with a compound, we are still trying to work out the best way to let JR’s and SR’s shoot 3D archery against each other while competing for the same grand prize.Davis did have a couple of long shots with no handicap for JR’s. EJ Oppenheimer, the top SR, shot 240 while Josh Wilkins, the top JR, shot 205. Congratulations to both of you! Thanks Dan Whiteside for filling in at the last minute with archery.

Chris Ridley spent 2 days clearing a path for hunter safety and then took 30 young hunters down this safety trail with a little help from Donald Enox. Donald looked good in a halo, he says he is working on his wings – we’re glad you’re still with us Donald! Also thanks to Chris, we had a little last-minute orienteering course. He is a man of many talents.

Because of how the gun club is laid out, we did shotgun last with all shooters at once. We got halfway through when the rain came. The new Clays Trailer sure is fun, I know everyone is looking forward to next year so we can do the entire round. Jacob Schuchardt shot a 250. Good shooting in the rain.

Winner.jpg (15051 bytes)Sharon Chadwick cooked hamburgers for everyone and it was a great lunch, no rain, good food.

As the rain came down about 5:30, Sharon Conrady entered all the shotgun scores, while we went over the test answers and filled out the surveys. In the end, Mr. Chadwick handed out trophies, medallions, and prizes to all. Jerry’s Gun Shop and Wilderness Way, both in Ardmore, provided lots of hunting equipment, making everyone a winner.

Congratulations to EJ Oppenheimer from Tulsa, the overall winner and new owner of a Ruger 1022 Stainless Synthetic rifle. Check out the scores; see you in Broken Bow, Woodward, or at least the state championship. I have ordered up sunshine, bring your suntan lotion and let’s do YHEC.
