fire -- yeah fire! Everyone was looking for
fire. Raw 25-35 mph North winds made for a tough morning. Tri-City Gun Club put together a
make shift classroom for the Hunter Responsibility exam and the Oklahoma Department of
Wildlife Conservation Game Warden, Tony Woodruff, presented 30 specimens in the warmth and
calm of our "YHEC classroom."While the test and Wildlife ID were happening, 30 Tri-City volunteers set up the new sporting clays trailer for its debut, as well as our new 3D archery targets, muzzleloader, .22 and orienteering ranges. We completed 4 events by noon and the feed was on. Hot dogs, hamburgers, Chili, chips, cookies, soft drinks and sun! Oklahoma's NRA Field Representative -- Darren Delong, and Oklahoma Rifle Association Director -- Charles Smith, visited with participants, parents, and volunteers. Oklahoma Sportsmens Coalition members Margaret Ruff (from the Wildlife Federation) graded tests, while Lindell Dillon captured a moment of each event in his photographs. The overall winner and new owner of a Ruger 1022 stainless synthetic .22, was Chris Clary of Norman. Randy Thomas of Mustang Gun & Pawn has offered to upgrade the YHEC Grand prize at the rest of our events, as well as handle the transfer of ownership paperwork. The synthetic stainless 1022 will last be our grand prize at all the remaining 2001 YHEC events. Thanks again Randy! Last year Norman had 5 participants. This year 13 young men and 4 young women won prizes ranging from 3 cell Mag Flashlights, compasses, binoculars, hunting knives, and NRA Hunter's Guides. Tri-City Gun Club will also be sponsoring their 3rd NRA sports-fest, May 5th (Contact: Fred Pope 573-0388). They have been a big base of support for the Oklahoma YHEC, and they also spearhead the Norman Hunter Ed. Clinic held each August. It is obvious, this club understands the future of our sport. They unselfishly share their knowledge at every opportunity. Paul Conrady, |
