Brian Young and the Tulsa Gun Club did it again! Last year there were 24
participants -- this year 42, and they all want to bring a friend to Davis.
Pre-registration is going to be a must from here on out. Brian had 9 registered Saturday
at 7:00 a.m. Sharon and her staff were pretty overwhelmed from 8 - 8:30 a.m. Brian's staff
of 20 had to make some fast changes, but with a little help from some parents we ran right
on time nearly all day!The Tulsa Chamber of Commerce provided a spectacular day for many 1st time students to further their outdoor knowledge. Orienteering worked on pacing, distance, and shooting bearings. When I go to the woods, I'm taking Doug Howard with me. Scoring a 270, he gives me hope of returning. The .22 rifle event saw a wide range of scores from 1st time scope shooters to some pretty salty scoring in the Sr. division. Zac Brown (267) just squeezed by EJ Oppenhimer (254). Shotgun was tough, maybe a little too tough. Bobby Bradley shot 18 of 25 and made some tough shots look easy. We received some feedback on our stations and will make some changes at Davis hey I'm learning.
I made a 220 in Wildlife ID, whereas EJ scored a 300! I think perhaps the 8 specimens I missed are native to Tulsa. There were lots of perfect scores on the Hunter Safety Trail and Responsibility Exam. You can bet on these being lots more difficult in the future. Tulsa provided lots of prizes, and those prizes came from lots of places. Please note our sponsors and make it a point to tell them thank you from OKYHEC when you shop or play there.

Lastly, there is Jeff, the reason I do this thing called
YHEC. Jeff is so eager to learn the proper way to go afield. He is new to our sport and he
only wants to do the right thing. When he fired the shotgun, it was one shot a at a time,
no doubles, (because he had to put his glasses back on after each shot.) On the Hunter
Safety Trail we had a wild pig that the farmer asked us to help him get rid of if we had
the opportunity. That pig was on a ridge, skylined. When asked whether to shoot or not
shoot, Jeff said, "don't shoot". Brad said, "ok
why?" Jeff said,
"because he was eating." The next station was a rabbit running into a brush
pile. Jeff said, "don't shoot." Brad asked, "ok
why?" Jeff said,
"because he is almost home."Jeff's evaluation of what was best about the YHEC, "shooting clays with a shotgun" (that almost knocked him down.) I hope I get to shoot with Jeff next year and I hope we can figure out a way to cook these clays. Sincerely, |
