2001 Woodward Highlights

WoodGroup2.jpg (9640 bytes)Woodward -- No wind, no rain, what a beautiful day in God's Country! The Woodward Rifle & Pistol Club hosted 20 participants from all over Oklahoma. After our Hunter Responsibility Exam we broke up into 4 groups -- Wildlife ID, Archery, .22 and Muzzleloader.

Everyone made their way around the course very efficiently thanks to the 15 volunteers Bill Fanning had assembled. Archery shot 10 3D targets with Joe WittRecurve.jpg (10758 bytes) (SR) scoring a 285. Austin Ederer (JR.) scored a 175 to lead the JR. division. Lots of 1st time archers saw their score improve as they made their way around the course with YHEC recurves. It's possible they will be hitting mom and dad up for a new compound in the near future.

The Muzzleloader is still a favorite. Kenny Scheverman (JR.), and Michall Schroeder (JR.) gave veteran Zac Brown (SR) a run for his money with a 3-way tie at 225. Zac also did well in .22 Rifle with 235 points. First place JR. Rocky Menefee scored 171 points. Zac also aced Wildlife ID as did the young women from Pioneer. These JR's are really coming along in all the events. The guys had better be taking notice!

Wildlifeid.jpg (8641 bytes)We were able to finish 5 events before lunch. The local Friends of NRA chapter served hot dogs, chips, cookies, and soft drinks about one o'clock, as we transformed the benchrest into a spectator gallery for sporting clays, as all 20 participants shot clays while we cleaned all the guns. Thanks to all that helped.

Sporting clays winner was Ryan Barby (JR.) with 204 points and the top SR. was Joe Witt with 192 points.

Watching 20 young adults (10 -18 years old) shooting sporting clays and cheering each other on as they are competing in a firearms competition is what I would like to see on the evening news. What a great time all of us had enjoying the freedoms we take for granted. As a volunteer told me at Woodward, "There is no telling what one of us will do today to make a difference in one of these young men or women's lives, that will effect our hunting and/or shooting heritage in the future, that is why I'm here." See you at Oklahoma City…

Sincerely,
Paul Conrady
