Mvc-409f.jpg (143192 bytes)BBBUUURRR !!!  7:00 AM 16 degree with the wind chill, you remained in motion to keep warm.  Everyone jumped in to set up the ranges and events. We were ready to go with Wildlife ID about 9:00 AM. Park Ranger and SOSC President Randy Fehr put on a display that proved challenging even for Senior Zac Brown he was 1st place with a 250, & Shiloh Butts led the Juniors with a 210. Randy always gathers all the participants towards the end of the day and discusses each specimen, thanks again Randy.

Following the Wildlife ID, Edie Ederer, presented the Hunter Responsibility Exam, Sr. Tanner Deckner & Jr. Eli Prater almost aced the test, both scored a 290, they both missed 1 question, the lowest score was 220, everyone did great. I think they all spent as much time as possible inside to do well because the heated classroom felt so good.

About 10:00 AM we broke into 5 groups and boy did it get noisy.

L.D. Lowery had the Front Stuffers blowing smoke and throwing lead at our lifesize targets. A lot of  1st time muzzleloaders were introduced to one of the most fun disciplines in the shooting sports. Sr. John De Hart, and Jr. Shiloh Butts, both scored 250.

Gary Miller had everyone on the .22 range aiming for the 1st place medal. Sr. John De Hart scored 227 and Jr. Rocky Menefee scored 239. You have to watch those Jrs., they are known for sneakin in and stealing 1st, quite often.

Well it was time to eat and Mark’s Bar-B-Que out of Davis filled the bill. Everyone came in to eat as they finished their 4th event, By 1:00 PM we were back at it. Mark donated 2 big boxes of afternoon snacks, boy did that come in handy. Thanks Mark.

Chris Ridley set up and ran the Hunter Safety Trail by himself for all the participants. Sr. Zach Brown and Jr. Courtney Newman both saw the snake and scored a perfect 300. I would have been bit, city slicker that I am. This Safety Trail is becoming popular with the Hunter Safety Courses, a great learning tool.

John Carpenter presented an orienteering course that had everyone shooting bearings and making tracks on a neat confined course. Sr. John De Hart with a 295 just edged Jr. Eli Prater with a 290.

Don Enox needs to clean up the woods so we can have an archery course. Just kidding, that ice storm 2 years ago has made archery tough, but Don did well setting up a course where you could find an arrow that didn’t find its mark. Sr. Zac Brown with a 270 and Jr. Shiloh Butts at 210 found their mark, and arrows.

MVC-421F.JPG (86433 bytes)After we completed all the other events Keith Morgan set up the clays trailer and we shot clays from about 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM what a blast. I think clays was the favorite. I know it was for Sr. Jason Duell 192 and Jr. Rocky Menefee with a 132.

While everyone visited about their day, Sharon compiled the final scores. When the smoke cleared 2 new CVA in line muzzleloaders found new owners. Sr. Zac Brown and Jr. Shiloh Butts were our champions. Everyone was invited to a prize table in order of their score to pick a prize.

SOSC found more support for next years event from people that saw YHEC this year for the 1st time. Isn’t it fun!!!

Jim Pumphrey (SOSC Youth Director) sure enjoys teaching our young adults about firearm safety. It shows.
