CANTON REGIONAL 2003 YHEC

When you start making plans for what to do on spring break you find a huge list of things that catch your interest and not enough time to do all of them.  When Saturday afternoon March 22nd came there had been 56 kids from all over Oklahoma and Kansas that chose to spend their last weekend of spring break participating in this years Canton YHEC. Again we hosted all eight events with some very good scores and some better knowledge of the shooting sports, compass course, wildlife ID, hunter safety trail (how many folks have hunted and never thought about steel traps being present?), and the responsibility exam.

Before I get to far into this I want to take a minute to HIGHLIGHT two very special people that have brought YHEC to the  kids of Oklahoma. Paul and Sharon Conrady have gone that extra mile to make these events work at all regional and state events that my kids and I have attended. Paul said we need highlights of the events... well, in my opinion, if it were not for these two main stays being interested in the YHEC we would not have highlights. Thanks Paul and Sharon for your hard work, long hours, and the many miles you travel to these events, it is a pleasure to work with you guys!

Grant Doyle from Belle Plaine, Ks had a long drive to compete but the trip home I'm sure was not as long as he took home High Point honors and an inline muzzleloader in the Sr. division with a score of 2079 points.

Josh Stockton from Fairview, Oklahoma had a fun filled day as always with the rest of the shooters from Fairview, but Josh took home High Point honors and a guided duck hunt in the Jr. division with a score of 1799 points.

This year we had a father and son Game Warden team give a short talk about being responsible for your actions when your are younger because someday you may be enforcing the laws. Thanks Game Wardens James Edwards, and James Edwards Jr.

There were some really young kids at this years event! That is what will keep the fire in this event. There is no better way to learn the right way than starting young. This is a proven fact. While at the clays range I noticed a young man not really having a good time with the shotgun. We made a few adjustments and when the round was over, ole Stetson Haigler(just turned 9) had a smile on his face and had even broken a couple of targets. Good job Stetson.

A big THANK YOU to Chain Ranch for providing the facility to have our event !

Chain Ranch Sportsman Club and the Canton 4-H Shooting Sports Club thanks each of the participants and their parents for bringing them to this years YHEC. Last year we had 29 take part and this year we had  56.  We are making plans for next years to be even better. Thank You and see you next year, March 20th 2004.
